Baramulla, Feb 18: Two youth were injured when police used force on pro-freedom demonstrations in north Kashmir’s Baramulla town on Friday. One of the youth received a pellet injury in his eye.

Eyewitnesses told Greater Kashmir that police fired rubber pellets on the pro-freedom protesters wounding two youth this evening. One of them, Faizan Ahmed Tantray, was hit in the eye and was referred to SMHS Hospital Srinagar for treatment.

Another youth was discharged from district hospital Baramulla after first aid. Reports said another person was hit by a stone.

Violent clashes broke out in the town after Friday prayers as scores of youth raising pro-freedom and anti-government slogans took to streets.

“As they reached main chowk of the town, police swung into action and lobbed teargas canisters to disperse them, leading to clashes in which eight cops including a sub-inspector were wounded,” they said.
Meanwhile, the chairman of Democratic Freedom Party, Shabir Ahmed Shah, was arrested by police today after Friday prayers at Hazratbal.

Eyewitnesses told Greater Kashmir that police detained Shah along with his associates when they took out a procession after prayers on the occasion of Friday following Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi (SAW) here.

A spokesman of Democratic Freedom Party castigated police for using force on party activists and its chairman.

“The government is resorting to arm twisting tactics to suppress the pro-freedom leadership,” he said.

The Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (R ) vice-chairman Javaid Ahmed Mir has also flayed the arrest of Shah.
