MANILA, Philippines—Residents living near the Pinaglaban Shrine in San Juan City whose houses were scheduled for demolition Tuesday were divided when former President Joseph Estrada arrived in the area following a violent confrontation that left around 50 people injured.

While some cheered and chanted “Erap! Erap!”—Estrada’s nickname—several were overheard hurling invectives at the city’s favorite son.

“You were given six months’ notice; you have a nice relocation [site]; you will be provided with a decent livelihood. What else do you want? I understand your situation,” Estrada told the residents.

Earlier in the day, around 50 persons were injured, including the city engineer, when residents of Barangay (village) Corazon de Jesus clashed with members of a demolition team tasked to tear down 103 houses.

Vincent Pacheco, the city rescue team head, said City Engineer Danilo Mercado suffered a cut in the forehead after he was grazed by a makeshift arrow.

He was taken to San Juan Medical Hospital, along with the other wounded, mostly members of the demolition team.

The police, meanwhile, arrested 12 people for carrying bladed weapons, rifle grenades and slingshots. Read more…

Estrada pacifies, as road widening and reconstruction for new government office continue

Manila: Former President Joseph Estrada pacified angry residents yesterday as 40 people — including old people, children and a city official — were injured when a government team demolished shanties to give way for road widening and reconstruction of a new government office.

The [local] government needs this space [for a project], » Estrada said when he met restive residents along P. Narciso street and Pinaglabanan Shrine in Corazon de Jesus village, suburban San Juan.
