After a day’s lull, clashes erupt in Surat again

After a lull on Friday, the textile workers took to the streets in Sachin GIDC in Surat on Saturday night, pelting stones on the police and a few of the textile factories, which were running.
Trouble started around 9 pm after the protesters came of know that some factories in the area were running. The protesters threatened the labourers coming out of the factories and even beat them up with wooden sticks. The protesters took out rallies in Talangpur, Paligam and Siddhi Ganesh Township in Sachin GIDC where over 1,000 factories were operational.
Seeing the situation going out of control, senior officers on duty for the Republic Day celebrations, rushed to the spot with a huge force to bring the situation under control.
Surat Commissioner of Police Shivanand Jha was also present in Sachin on Saturday night — the first instance during the seven-day strike — for the crowd control exercise, which continued for an hour.
