Stone-pelting, clashes erupt in Ahmedabad’s Dariapur area, 6 hurt

| At least six people were injured and more than 10 vehicles, including a police van, destroyed late on Sunday evening when clashes broke out at six different places in the Walled City. Police had to fire teargas shells to disperse violent mobs and bring the situation under control.
Quoting eyewitnesses, sources said the violence first erupted at 8.15pm at Bava nu Delu, opposite Nani Ali ni Pol near JP School in Dariapur area when members of two communities started pelting stones at each other. The exact cause of the violence is not yet clear but the police say they are investigation the matter. Sources in the police, however, said that, two days back, there were some heated arguments between the two communities over kite flying. The quarrel was resolved the day it started, the sources said. But on Sunday, members of the two communities again started fighting over kites. The tension worsened and news of the fighting spread to five other areas in the region. Sources said many people from the violent crowd moved from JP School area towards the Tambu (police) Chowki and pelted stones in the residential areas. Uttarayan clashes: 5 arrested in Ahmedabad

The police arrested five persons in the early hours of Monday in connection with Sunday’s clashes in the Dariapur area of Ahmedabad. Eight accused are reportedly absconding, the police said.
The clashes erupted after people from two communities got into a squabble during the kite flying festival.
The accused were identified as Abdul Samir Sheikh (26) from Shahpur, Mohammad Javed Sheikh (20) from Naginapol, Abdul Hafiz Sheikh (21) from Moti Ali ni Pol, Mohsin Munaf (18) from Rohilawad in Raikhad and Ashwin Parmar (36) from Vankarvas in Dariapur. Read more…
