ATHENES, Grèce – Des affrontements ont opposé la police grecque et environ 500 militants anti-immigration, samedi, alors que les forces de l’ordre ont pourchassé certains militants dans une église et y ont introduit des gaz lacrymogènes.

Aucun blessé n’a été rapporté.

Les activistes extrémistes, qui ont jeté des pierres aux policiers, étaient frustrés par la tenue d’une manifestation de militants favorables aux immigrants, à Athènes. Ce rassemblement avait été prévu dans la foulée du projet d’érigation d’une clôture sur la frontière entre la Grèce et la Turquie.

Des statistiques officielles suggèrent qu’environ 128 000 immigrants illégaux ont pénétré le territoire grec en 2010. La plupart d’entre eux arrivaient par la frontière turque, faisant de la Grèce la porte d’entrée de l’immigration illégale au sein de l’Union européenne. Pour endiguer l’afflux de nouveaux arrivants, Athènes a annoncé qu’une clôture de 12,5 kilomètres de long serait érigée à la frontière entre les deux États. Lire la suite…

ATHENS (Reuters) – Far-right protesters threw stones at a pro-migrant march in Athens on Saturday before being dispersed by bursts of teargas, police said, in the latest sign of tension over the capital’s growing immigrant population.

Over 1,000 members of anti-racism groups, leftists and immigrants were marching in central Athens to protest against a controversial plan to build a fence at the border with Turkey to stop illegal immigrants from entering Greece.

« Over 100 members of neo-Nazi groups and about 200 local residents attacked the leftists and other protesters with stones. The police used several rounds of teargas and flash grenades, » a police official said.

Riots break out in Athens at anti-racism rally

ATHENS (BNO NEWS) – Riots broke out in Athens on Saturday at a protest against a planned wall between Turkey and Greece, local media reported.

Left-wing demonstrators clashed with right-wing protesters and police in the Agios Panteleimon area, which has a large immigrant population. Around 3,000 left-wing activists wanted to demonstrate against xenophobia and stage a concert, while extreme-right protesters also gathered to demonstrate.

Left-wing protesters threw stones at the police, while right-wing demonstrators chanted anti-immigrant slogans and threw stones to leftist protesters. Police fired tear gas and stun grenades at the demonstrators to keep the two groups apart. Read more…
