LUSAKA, Jan 14 (Reuters) – Two people were killed and four others injured on Friday at a rally calling for the autonomy of western Zambia after police clashed with protesters, a government minister said.

« Two lives have been lost at the hands of the rioters themselves and the police, » Home Affairs Minister Mkhondo Lungu said at a news briefing.

Police shot dead one man in a group of protesters who attempted to set a petrol station ablaze and a child was stoned to death, he said.

A hospital source said four other people were being treated for bullet wounds.

More than 100 people were arrested after police tried to stop the rally in Mongu, about 580 km (360 miles) west of the Zambian capital, Lungu said the rioters threw stones at the public and police, breaking car windscreens and damaging property. Read more…

Zambia: Mongu riots leave two dead

Two people have died following the riot in Mongu today over the Barotse agreement. Home Affairs Minister Mkondo Lungu confirmed the two deaths and arrest of about hundred people in connection with the riot.

And Government has said that  it will not condone any group of people that will continue spreading hatred, tribalism and violence in the country.

Acting government spokesperson Dora Siliya said that  anyone who wants to take the law into their own hands will be dealt with firmly to send a signal to all thinking that government is soft on the matter.

Youths block the road that leads to the palace during the riot in Mongu over the Barotse agreement.

Ms Siliya has called on people of Western province to remain calm and not to allow the situation to worsen. Read more…

Lozi or Barotse : Complex of 25 Bantu-speaking peoples divided into six cultural groups centring on the area formerly known as Barotseland in western Zambia. Numbering more than 700,000, the Lozi move between two sets of villages in response to annual flooding. Their economy is based on agriculture, animal husbandry, and fishing. Their stratified society consists of aristocrats, commoners, and serfs.
