DHAKA — Police fired tear gas and baton-charged thousands of investors in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka on Monday as crowds vented their fury after the stock market tumbled nine percent in an hour.
Trading on the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) was halted when stocks fell a record 9.25 percent soon after opening in a plunge that sent outraged investors onto the streets.
The benchmark Dhaka Stock Exchange general index (DGEN) rose 80 percent in 2010, with small investors piling into the market, but has suffered falls in the past three weeks in what analysts described as a much-needed correction.
Police clashed with protesters outside the stock exchange building, where tyres and office furniture were set alight as crowds chanted slogans against the government and market regulators.
Similar protests broke out elsewhere in the country, with at least 500 investors rallying in the southwestern port city of Chittagong, local police chief Rafiqual Islam told AFP.
In Dhaka, riot police reinforcements were called in to break up demonstrations as offices barricaded their gates and windows to avoid being attacked.

Bangladeshi riot police used teargas and water cannon to break up violent protests by angry investors on Monday after shares in the Dhaka Stock Exchange dropped almost 9 per cent in less than an hour of trading, prompting authorities to close down the bourse.
The Dhaka Stock Exchange has fallen 27 per cent since early December, including a near 7 per cent fall on Sunday. The police intervention came after furious investors vandalised cars and blocked roads around the exchange. The bourse is expected to reopen on Tuesday. Read more…

La Policía de la capital de Bangladesh, Dacca, usó bastones para dispersar a los participantes de las violentas protestas en el centro de la ciudad. AP informa, que miles de personas salieron a las calles tras la suspensión de la actividad de la Bolsa de Bangladesh, que sufrió una caída del 9,25% en una hora. Los inversores indignados llenaron las principales arterias de la capital, rompiendo coches, quemando cubiertas de automóviles y atacando a los agentes del orden.
La multitud gritó las consignas antigubernamentales, creyendo que precisamente la mala administración llevó a los resultados catastróficos para la economía. El mercado nacional sufre una caída dura y continuada desde el 5 de diciembre, cuando el índice bursátil del país alcanzó su nivel máximo en toda la historia de Bangladesh al alzar por 80% desde los principios del año.
Inmediatamente después de este día la situación se convirtió en contraria: por poco más de un mes el índice perdió un 27%, incluso el 9,25% del lunes y el 7,8% el domingo pasado. Tras estos acontecimientos el Gobierno ordenó cerrar la Bolsa por un tiempo indefinido, mientras que la Comisión de Seguridad e Intercambio del país organizó un encuentro emergente con los bancarios y agentes de bolsa con el fin de definir las acciones necesarias para evitar siguientes caídas.
