AMMAN –– Riots erupted anew in the southern city of Maan Tuesday for the second day following the death of two people during a brawl involving workers in a water project in the desert governorate.

Meanwhile, the government warned that it would not be lenient with the “small group” who “took advantage of the incidents in Maan Governorate to destabilise the area and disturb the life of its residents”.

Speaking to the Jordan News Agency, Petra, and Jordan TV, Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Saad Hayel Srour said that authorities are following up on developments in Maan, stressing that at the time of his statement, the situation was “calm and stable”. More…

AMMAN (Reuters) – Rioters in the town of Maan in southern Jordan set fire to government buildings and police cars on Tuesday in a protest against the killing of two men this week, prompting the government to send security forces to the area to restore order.

Witnesses said hundreds of rioters angry at the authorities’ failure to arrest the culprits behind Monday’s killings spilt on to the streets of the desert town, setting a court building alight and damaging businesses.

« They hurled stones and burnt tyres in the main streets of the city. Other groups of rampaging masked youths burnt the local court, » said one witness, Ibrahim Kreishan.

Security officials confirmed troubles had erupted and tear gas was used to disperse hundreds of people who had attacked government property and damaged private shops. More…

Centenares de manifestantes incendiaron el martes edificios públicos, autos de policía y oficinas en la ciudad de Maan, en Jordania, para protestar contra el asesinato de tres jordanos al parecer en una disputa relacionada con el trabajo.

« Más de 500 personas incendiaron un edificio municipal, el tribunal, la oficina de correo, vehículos policiales y civiles, almacenes y una estación de gasolina », indicó a la AFP un responsable de los servicios de seguridad.

Ma’an (Arabic: معان‎) is a town in southern Jordan 218 km away from the capital Amman. It is the capital of Ma’an Governorate. Ma’an has a population of around 50,000. The city had a population of 22,989 in the 1992 census and is estimated as being about 50,000 as of 2007 according to the Ma’an Municipality.
