Riots in Tunisia over high unemployment are continuing for the ninth consecutive day

Clashes continued Saturday night between Tunisian security forces and protestors in Sidi Bou Zid, a city in the centre of the country.

The government has recognised the legitimacy of the demands made by the public against high unemployment, but rejected the use of violence.

Al Jazeera reported that the clashes persisted overnight between security and the residents of Al-Reqab and Al-Maknassy as riots hit the ninth day.

Nouveau cas de suicide à Sidi Bouzid

Tunis – Un jeune Tunisien s’est suicidé dimanche dans la région de Sidi Bouzid au centre-ouest de la Tunisie, en proie à des troubles sociaux sur fond de chômage, a-t-on appris de sources concordantes. Lotfi Guadri, 34 ans, s’est jeté dans un puits dans la zone de Gdéra à cinq km de Sidi Bouzid, a affirmé à l’AFP un syndicaliste et un membre de la famille. Les motifs de son suicide restent à établir avec certitude.

Selon le syndicaliste Mongi Rnimi, la situation sociale difficile de Lotfi Guadri, un universitaire au chômage depuis cinq ans, l’a poussé à se donner la mort. Pour un proche de la famille, Belgacem Guadri, « la victime souffrait de problèmes psychiques, la raison pour laquelle il avait interrompu ses études depuis quelques années ». Social unrest over unemployment and riots in Tunisia reach the capital

Tunis, 26 December – One week into the outbreak of social unrest and riots protesting against the worsening living conditions and growing unemployment, especially among the educated youth, 18-year old Mohamed Ammeri was shot to death by police forces opening fire against protesters in the town of Menzel Bou Zaiyne. Tunisian government sources claim the use of fire arms against the protesting crowd was justified after a railway engine and three vehicles had been set ablaze during a raid on the National Guard headquarters in Menzel Bou Zaiyne. The incident incited thousands more to join the protest marches which meanwhile have extended to the capital. The outbreak of social unrest was triggered off last week by the suicide attempts of two young men. One of them, Mohamed Bou Azizi, set himself ablaze to protest against the confiscation of his modest fruit and vegetable stand with which the college graduate tried to earn a living. The other young man, Naji Felhi, electrocuted himself in desperation over his failure to find employment.

De nouveaux affrontements violents ont eu lieu dans la nuit dans la région de Sidi Bouzid, dans le centre-ouest de la Tunisie, faisant un blessé par balle et des dégâts matériels importants, a-t-on appris dimanche de sources syndicales Des centaines de Tunisiens ont participé à une manifestation dans la ville de Souk Jedid, à 15 km au sud de Sidi Bouzid, en proie à des troubles sociaux depuis plus d’une semaine sur fond de chômage, a indiqué à l’AFP Mongi Rnimi, syndicaliste et témoin oculaire.

Des hommes de la garde nationale ont procédé à des tirs de sommation pour disperser les manifestants qui ont encerclé le poste de la garde et mis le feu à la sous-préfecture de cette ville de plus de 19.000 habitants, a-t-il ajouté.
