AMMONNEWS – Rakan Qadah – The riots and group fights that erupted Sunday morning in Yarmouk University in Irbid, northern Jordan, spread to Irbid Private University and Al Husn College, official sources told ‘Ammon News.’

Sources added that heightened security measures at Yarmouk University led students to ‘move their riots’ to other colleges in the area where relatives of both parties involved in the fights study.

The clashes escalated Sunday morning in and around the Yarmouk University Campus.

Meanwhile, President of Irbid Private University, Dr. Muhammad Sabarini said that crowds are gathering outside the university gate, adding that he has made several phone calls with Irbid Governor and police chiefs to contain the violence and prevent the rioters from entering the university.

University security cadres heightened security measures to prevent non-students from entering the university.

Security also cordoned Al Husn College as rioters attempted to extend the clashes into the college campus, Dean Dr. Zakariya Qudah told ‘Ammon News,’ adding that conditions are under control now.

Eye witnesses told ‘Ammon News’ that dozens of riots vandalized Irbid University property.

Meanwhile, hundreds of students staged a sit-in at the Students’ Affairs Faculty at Yarmouk University on Sunday to protest the violence and chaos witnessed at the university Sunday morning, and called for the resignation of the head of the University Security, blaming him for the escalation of riots.

Yarmouk University President Dr. Sultan Abu Orabi met with protestors Sunday morning to listen to their concerns.

Clashes broke out Sunday morning between students near the Economics Faculty which led to major damages and vandalism to university property.

Police and University Security cordoned the university and tightened measures in and around the campus. Students had to show their students ID’s to enter the university and were patted down for any weapons or dangerous items.

Yarmouk University had witnessed clashes throughout last week, starting on Tuesday and escalating on Thursday. Clashes caused major material damage to university process, and several students were injured.

‘Ammon News’ learned that Yarmouk University administration formed a committee to investigate the violence and identify individuals involved in the incidents.

Meanwhile, President Abu Orabi denied in statements to ‘Ammon News’ that students armed with sharp objects were arrested, yet he confirmed that tensions are still overwhelming the atmosphere in and around the university.
