JERUSALEM (Ma’an) — Clashes between Israeli forces and Palestinians erupted in the flashpoint East Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan on Sunday.
Ma’an’s correspondent said large numbers of Israeli forces were deployed in the area, and were firing live ammunition, tear gas canisters, sound grenades and rubber-coated steel bullets at Palestinian youth. No injuries were reported.
Tension was high in the neighborhood following attempts by Israeli authorities to remove a sit-in protest tent, erected on the roof of resident Na’im Ruweidi’s house.
Ruweidi had been summoned by Israeli intelligence officers on Friday and ordered to remove the tent by Sunday. He said officials told him they would deport him and his family from the city, and demolish his home, if he did not comply.
Earlier on Sunday, dozens of residents gathered inside the tent and masked young men set fire to tires to prevent Israeli forces entering the home, director of Wadi Helwa Information Centre Jawad Seyam said.

Israeli police have detained a stone-throwing boy who was struck by a car driven by a settler in a flashpoint east Jerusalem neighbourhood earlier this month, police said yesterday.
Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said Imran Mansur, 12, had been brought in on Saturday for questioning about the stone-throwing, adding that he was accompanied by his father at all times and would likely be released « soon. »
Mansur, 12, and Iyad Gheit, 10, were wearing masks and throwing stones in the Silwan neighbourhood on October 8 when the car driven by David Beeri, a local leader of the hardline Elad settler organisation, rounded a corner and struck them.
Mansur was thrown into the air and bounced off the car’s windscreen before crashing to the ground in the incident captured by AFP and other photographers. The car stopped briefly before driving off.
Mansur suffered a broken leg, while Gheit was taken to the hospital to have glass removed from his arm.
Jerusalem police identified the driver as Beeri and said they questioned him and released him on the day of the incident.
Beeri’s Elad organisation encourages Jews to move into dense neighbourhoods in Arab east Jerusalem, which was captured by Israel and annexed in 1967 in a move not recognised by the international community.
Clashes have erupted in Silwan on a number of occasions in recent weeks, with Palestinian youths throwing rocks at settlers and police, who have fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse them.

Israeli forces said on Sunday that they had arrested Imran Mansur to question him for throwing stones, AFP reported.
Mansur, 12, and Iyad Gheit, 10, were hit by the vehicle driven by David Be’eri, leader of Silwan’s Jewish settlers, while protesting in the East al-Quds neighborhood of Silwan on October 8.
Mansur had his leg broken while Gheit was taken to hospital to have glass particles taken out of his arm.
They initially resisted to be hustled into a car, which apparently meant to take them to hospital.
Palestinian youngsters fear getting into strangers’ cars because they have seen their friends taken away by Israeli troops on a regular basis.
Mansur’s arrest comes while the culprit was only briefly questioned and released on the day of the incident.
Israel occupied East al-Quds, the promised capital of the future Palestinian state, alongside the other Palestinian territory of the West Bank in 1967.
Tel Aviv later annexed the territories, in violation of international law.
Be’eri’s hard-line Elad organization encourages Jews to move into dense neighborhoods in East al-Quds, in line with Israel’s policy of Judiazation of the city.
