Mendhar, Jammu & Kashmir: Muslim organisations in Rajouri district of Jammu have called a bandh today and announced three-day mourning for the three people killed in the violence in Mendhar on Wednesday.

All schools and offices are closed in the district and there is overnight curfew in Poonch town and Mendhar.

Three people were killed and 20 others were injured in Mendhar on Wednesday when protests to show solidarity with the Valley against the Quran burning shown on an Iran news channel turned violent and protesters clashed with the police. The police reportedly fired on protesters on control them

Indian police opened fire on Muslim demonstrators in a town near Kashmir, killing four people and wounding 30 as leaders of India’s main political parties debated how to end months of separatist protests in the region.

The new clashes came two days after 18 protesters and a police officer were killed in street battles.

In response to those protests, which were exacerbated by reports of a Koran desecration in the United States, authorities imposed a round-the-clock curfew across Indian-controlled Kashmir and threatened to shoot violators on sight.

The Koran issue resurfaced when thousands of protesters assembled south-west of Srinagar, Indian Kashmir’s main city, chanting « Down with Koran desecrators » and « We want freedom ».

Police fired tear gas and swung batons as the protesters tried to enter a school and used live ammunition when the crowd refused to disperse.

Three protesters were killed and ten seriously injured when police opened fire in Mendhar town of Poonch District on Wednesday. Other reports said at least 30 had been injured in the clash.

Muslims chanting « Down with Quran desecrators » and « We want freedom », were a holding a protest against alleged reports of the burning of the Quran in the United States. During the protest, they tried to set a missionary school on fire, which prompted the police to open fire.

The injured protesters were brought to Rajouri and then airlifted to Jammu for treatment.

Bashir Khan, an eyewitness, said: « A peaceful procession was being held, but sub-divisional police officer ordered indiscriminate firing on peaceful protestors. »

The new clashes came two days after 18 protesters and a police officer were killed in street battles.

Authorities slapped a round-the-clock curfew across the territory and also threatened to shoot violators on sight.

The recent eruption of violence has left the government searching for a new strategy for dealing with the protests.
