Army out after Deganga rioting

BARASAT: The Army had to be called out to quell communal clashes that erupted at Deganga in North 24-Parganas on Monday night. Nearly 30 people, including two policemen, were injured in the violence that continued till Tuesday morning.

The last time the Army was out in Bengal was when rioting broke out in parts of Kolkata over the writings of Taslima Nasreen in November 2007.

The flare-up at Deganga was sparked by a stray comment when a religious procession was passing by a disputed plot in an area with mixed demography. Officials at Writers’ Buildings said the Army had to be called out mobs rampaging through streets pelted stones at the police and could not be brought under control by personnel of the Rapid Action Force, the Central Reserve Police Force and the Border Security Force.

« We did not want matters to get out of hand and requisitioned the Army. Soldiers have started route marches in the area and things have started returning to normal, » a senior Army official said.

Deganga is about 35 km from Kolkata and close to the India- Bangladesh border. « Nearly 200 Army personnel have been deployed in the area to assist the civil administration in bringing about peace in the area, » a defence ministry spokesperson said.

DEGANGA (WEST BENGAL): One youth was killed and several vehicles were torched in clashes between two groups since Monday night over demarcating the boundary of a burial ground at Nagerjheel here in North 24 Parganas district.

Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Cr.PC were clamped in the entire Deganga police station area. In all, 125 Army jawans reached the area on Tuesday evening and staged a flag march.

According to a senior district official, the setting up of a makeshift structure along the boundary wall of the Deganga burial ground triggered the clashes. “Local people obstructed the approach road to the area from the district headquarters in Barasat at the Beliaghata bridge. More than 40 shops and houses were ransacked and set afire. Two trucks and a bus were also set ablaze,” Siddh Nath Gupta, DIG (Presidency Range), said. Mohammed Sahabuddin, from Falti village, was shot in the leg during the clashes and he died after being taken to hospital.

« Around 200 Army personnel have been deployed in the area to assist the civil administration to restore peace, » a defence ministry spokesperson said. Officials at the state secretariat at the Writers’ Building said the Army had to be called in after efforts by the police, Rapid Action Force, Central Reserve Police Force and Border Security Force failed to control the situation at Deganga, around 35km from Kolkata and close to the Indo-Bangla border.

During the violence, more than 35 shops were ransacked and five set ablaze. Vehicles on Taki Road were burnt, disrupting traffic.

The mob pelted stones at policemen and RAF personnel when they reached the spot. Two policemen were hospitalised with injuries. An officer said violence erupted around 8.30pm on Monday over a local issue. Later, the violence spilled over to neighbouring villages.

« Some criminals took advantage of the situation and entered houses in an attempt to loot valuables. Nearly 25 houses were broken into and innocents beaten up. A youth was shot by a miscreant. Violence escalated after news of his death spread. Though nobody has been arrested as yet, prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC have been clamped to prevent any fresh outbreak of violence, » the officer added.
