Jakarta – At least five civilians died from gunshot wounds after police opened fire during clashes with residents in Indonesia’s province of Central Sulawesi, a media report said Wednesday.

Thousands of angry demonstrators attacked a police station in the Buol district town of Biau late Tuesday, after the death of a motorist in police custody one day earlier, the state-run Antara news agency reported.

Kashmir Timumun reportedly died on Monday hours after he was arrested following a traffic accident which involved a member of the local police. The family alleged he died from mistreatment.

In an attempt to stop the attacks and disperse the crowd, the police fired shots that killed two protestors and seriously wounded several others.

The death toll rose to five after three of the wounded died in hospital, Brigadier General Amin Saleh, chief of the Central Sulawesi police, was quoted as saying.

Saleh said at least 19 policemen were injured, adding that angry residents attacked officers with stones, sharp weapons and Molotov cocktails.

Early Wednesday angry residents attacked police officers’ homes in retaliation for the deaths.

The angry mob destroyed other property belonging to the police, including setting several vehicles on fire, the report said.

Authorities deployed five more combined platoons of soldiers and police to Biau to help restore order.

TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta: Two killed at at least sixteen were treated in hospital after a second attack at a police station in Buol regency, Central Sulawesi, 140 kilometers southeast of Palu, by local residents after report of abuse of a resident under polcie custody.

Residents from three administrative villages; Leok, Buol, and Kulango armed with sharp weapons and stones attacked Biau Precinct Police Station in Buol City and clashed with about 100 police personnel who fired shots which killed two attackers and injured 16 others.

There were reportedly a thousand of residents involved in the attack, a second one after the first attack that involved smaller number of residents on Monday night.

Residents was angered by the death of a male detainee at Biau Precinct Police after relatives garnered support from locals to protest and demand explanation for the death.

Five people were reportedly killed after police officers opened fire at hundreds of angry local people who ransacked Biau police station in the Central Sulawesi regency of Buol on Tuesday evening, a media reported here on Wednesday.

Buol Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Amin Litarso quoted by the Jakarta Post as saying that the angry locals also damaged a number of police facilities and properties. The attack followed the death of local resident, Kasmir Timumun, a motorcycle taxi driver, while being detained at the police office on Monday.

Sebanyak 19 anggota Brimob Polda Sulawesi Tengah terluka dalam insiden penyerangan Polsek Biau, Kabupaten Buol, Selasa malam.

« Sampai Rabu (1/9) ini, korban anggota polisi dalam insiden itu mencapai 19 orang anggota Brimob terluka, » kata Kapolres Buol AKBP Amin Litarso seperti dikutip kantor berita Antara.

Dia mengatakan, ke-19 anggota Brimob yang luka itu umumnya terkena lemparan batu, sabetan senjata tajam dan bom molotov dari massa yang mengamuk.

Luka yang dialami para prajurit Brimob itu umumnya tidak parah kecuali satu orang yang tubuhnya terbakar setelah terkena lemparan bom molotov para penyerang. Selain itu aksi anarkis warga juga menimbulkan kerusakan kantor Polsek Biau.

« Di lokasi itu, tiga dari empat motor milik polisi dibakar, dan satu motor lainnya dirusak, » tambah Kapolres.
