The arrest of government critic Abdul Jalil Al Singace on Friday led to clashes in Bahrain.

This is his second arrest and it comes amid a renewed call by top leadership to punish ‘instigators’ or thsoe who ‘stand in the way’ of the country’s development, reported the UAE daily Gulf News.

There were sporadic clashes in Shiite neighbourhoods in Bahrain and Al Singace’s supporters gathered in front of the Public Prosecution offices demanding his release.

King Hamad bin Eisa Al Khalifa said all forms of incitement carried out by instigators must be halted, with instigators bearing full responsibility for their actions, reported BNA.

Al Singace, who also chairs the human rights office of Haq, had addressed a seminar in the British House of Lords on August 5, where he spoke about human rights conditions in the island nation.

Bahrain will elect a new parliament in two months and is struggling to maintain harmony amid sectarian strife.

Sporadic clashes after police detain Al Singace a second time

Dubai The arrest of outspoken government critic, Abdul Jalil Al Singace, sparked clashes in Bahrain late on Friday as supporters gathered in front of the Public Prosecution offices demanding his release.

There were also reports of sporadic clashes in various Shiite neighbourhoods in the Gulf country.

Al Singace, who works for the Haq movement for Civil Liberties and Democracy was returning from a speaking engagement in London discussing human rights conditions in Bahrain, when authorities arrested him at the Bahrain International Airport.

This is his second arrest and it comes amid a renewed call by top leadership to punish “instigators” or those who “stand in the way” of the country’s development.

According to the Bahrain News Agency (BNA), King Hamad Bin Eisa Al Khalifa said that all forms of incitement carried out by instigators must be halted, with the instigators bearing full responsibility for their actions.

Shortly after the meeting Bahrain’s Prime Minister Shaikh Khalifa Bin Salman Al Khalifa affirmed that all government bodies, including the Ministry of Interior, would use all resources to prevent such instigators from achieving their goals.

“Those who do not hear the voice of reason or deliberately choose to ignore it will hear the voice of law,” Al Khalifa said.
