Student’s murder: mob goes on the rampage

NEW DELHI: Angry relatives and neighbours of 20-year-old Kamal Singh Rawat, a Delhi University commerce student who was brutally murdered by some young men at Sonia Vihar in the trans-Yamuna area on Monday, went on the rampage, setting afire the houses of three of the suspects, damaging vehicles and hurling stones at the police on Tuesday. While two of the murder accused have been nabbed, the police have arrested 38 people on charges of arson and rioting.

The protesters started gathering near Nanaksar Gurdwara and Sonia Vihar-Pushta Road around 9-30 a.m. and blocked the roads demanding immediate action against the accused. The police initially tried to persuade them to clear the way for traffic, but the protesters turned violent and started hurling stones at them. Eight policemen were injured in the heavy pelting.

The police lobbed tear-gas shells and resorted to lathi-charge to disperse the rampaging mob. The protesters then retreated only to regroup, targeting the houses of those suspected to have murdered Kamal. Most of the occupants had already fled the area anticipating a backlash.

The protesters forced their way into the house of Choudhry Vishnu Singh Nagar, father of suspects Bachchan and Praveen. They ransacked the premises, threw the household items out and set them ablaze. They also torched the house, a motorcycle and damaged a car.

The frenzied mob burnt down the house of another area resident, Ombir Singh, an office located in the premises and damaged a motorcycle. The house of another suspect Umesh along with those of his neighbours Satbir, Jai Kishan and Ajay were also damaged by the protesters. By the time the police reached the spot, most of them had vanished from the scene. In all, six motorcycles and a car were damaged.

“We have registered a case of rioting and arson and arrested 38 people, including 10 women, so far,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-East Delhi) S.S. Yadav.

Extra force has been deployed in the area to prevent any further violence.

On Monday evening, the area residents had blocked traffic on Sonia Vihar-Pushta Road, but were dispersed by the police. They alleged that Kamal was murdered over a monetary dispute with an automobile dealer. Last year, he had paid money to the dealer to modify a motorcycle, but he did not complete the job nor did he return the money. This led to a fight between them.

residents of northwest Delhi’s Sonia Vihar on Tuesday held protest and set on fire the residences of three men allegedly involved in the murder of a Delhi University student.

The police officials said the incident took place at around 9.30 am when several groups of locals started gathering outside the houses of the three accused. The crowd started raising slogans against the accused.
“The angry mob turned violent suddenly and they simultaneously barged into the houses of accused and tried to torch them. They also looted the houses,” said a senior Delhi police official.
Sources said that the mob caught hold of the brother of one of the accused and assaulted him. He was however rescued by the police. “The police had to sent in five companies of reserve police and rapid action force to the spot to control the situation,” the official said. The four accused are still at large.
Twenty-year-old Kamal Singh Rawat was stabbed to death on Monday morning allegedly after a deal for purchasing a motorcycle with an auto sales manager turned sour.
