KOLKATA: Sporadic political clashes were reported from some pockets of the city after the civic election results were declared on Wednesday.
Police said trouble broke out in Sreemohan Lane and Chandramadhab Lane in Tollygunge on Wednesday night following an altercation between supporters of Congress and Trinamool Congress.
Trinamool workers alleged that supporters of Congress’s Mala Roy hurled abused at some of their men. The Trinamool activists protested, triggering an altercation. Within moments, some CPM supporters arrived at the spot and a fight ensued. Hundreds of activists, including some local rowdies from warring camps, hurled bombs, bottles and bricks at each other and ransacked shops.
A huge police force, along with RAF personnel, rushed to the spot. In the presence of senior officers, police dispersed the mob after resorting to a lathicharge. Police nabbed four persons for rioting.
