Violence breaks out in east Jerusalem neighborhood

At least five Palestinian residents and five Israeli police officers were injured in a brawl that broke out in an east Jerusalem neighborhood Saturday.
The Palestinians were wounded when Jewish settlers opened fire on them in the Silwan neighborhood, according to Palestinians eyewitnesses and the neighborhood information center, which represents Arab residents in the area. Mahmoud Qaraeen of the Silwan Information Center said a brawl started when settlers in the area provoked the residents by gathering in front of their houses and started shouting provocative slogans and shouting profanity.
However, Israeli police spokesman Mickey Rosenfeld disputed the claims, saying no Jewish settlers were involved in the Silwan violence Saturday. He said it all started when Palestinians hurled rocks at Israeli policemen on patrol, leaving five of them lightly injured.

At least nine Israeli police officers were injured by rioting Arabs in the eastern Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan on Saturday.
Known to Jews as the City of David, the most ancient part of the Israeli capital, Silwan has become a flashpoint as the Palestinians try to wrest control of the city.
Saturday’s violence began when an Israeli police patrol was making a routine pass through the neighborhood. As they reached the more Arab-dominated part of the neighborhood, the officers were ambushed by stone throwers. Two officers were struck in the head and were evacuated to a local hospital with moderate injuries.
A larger police force responded to the area and also came under attack.
In related news, an Arab youth on Saturday snatched the rifle of a young female Israeli soldier near Jerusalem’s Old City. The Arab boy cried out « Allah Akbar » – « Allah is Great » before being tackled and arrested by Israeli Border Police officers. The female soldier was lightly wounded in the assault.
