The Shapur locality witnessed communal violence for the third successive day on Wednesday. Vijay Dantaniya (52), who was was among the four injured on Tuesday, died at the Civil Hospital on Wednesday.
State government sources said Chief Minister Narendra Modi chaired an urgent review meeting on the situation. A control room to watch over the developments was set up at the Circuit House here with Home Minister Amit Shah and three other ministers — Fakirbhai Vaghela, Ramanlal Vora, Anandi Patel — overseeing it.
The police maintained that they were exercising maximum restraint, while several incidents of arson were reported from the affected areas. Vehicles were burnt, shops vandalised and people attacked in some areas. The police lathicharged and lobbed teargas shells to control the mobs.
Dantaniya was injured in stone pelting and had also suffered acid burns in the attack. Fresh trouble broke out on Wednesday after his funeral rites were performed. By late evening, the clashes had reportedly spilled over to Relief Road, Delhi Darwaza, Kalupur. Seven injured persons were taken to government hospitals.

AHMEDABAD: The Shahpur area remained on the boil on Tuesday as violence that flared up late on Monday night resumed on Tuesday afternoon, forcing police to fire in the air to scare away violent mobs.
According to Shahpur police station officials, they had to fire five rounds in the air and use teargas shells on Tuesday to disperse a mob that burnt a jeep and three shops.
On Monday, the police had to fire seven rounds in the air and use 113 teargas shells to control the rioting mob. Reports said one person was shot at and two were injured in an acid attack. The authorities have posted over 300 policemen in the riot-hit areas. According to officials, trouble started late on Monday night when a marriage procession was passing by a mosque. Warring groups resorted to heavy stone-pelting. Many persons were injured and shifted to government hospitals. Officials were unable to give an exact figure, but locals said at least 10 persons were injured.
« Around 12.45 pm on Tuesday, stone-pelting started around Nagorivaad, Delhi Darwaja, Burkha Chowky and Panjrapol areas of Shahpur. We were able to control the situation in two hours, but by then many properties had been damaged. We have intensified patrolling in the area, » said N N Gohil, assistant commissioner of police.
According to sources, Tuesday’s violence was worse as police officials found acid bottles lying on the street.

Shahpur in Ahmedabad remained tense for the second consecutive day as fresh clashes erupted between two communities at Panjrapol on Tuesday. The police lobbed tear gas shells and fired five rounds to control the situation.
On Monday night, the police had lobbed 105 tear gas shells and fired seven rounds to disperse the mob.
Police officers said trouble began after a marriage procession passed near a mosque at Nagoriwad in Shahpur, during prayer time. The procession was taken out around 9 pm and some people praying inside said it disturbed them. This led to a verbal spat and people soon started pelting stones at each other.
On Monday night, a mob torched two houses, six auto-rickshaws, one motorcycle, a car and also vandalised police vans. About 10 residents of the area and six policemen sustained injuries and personnel from the SRPF, local police and the Ahmedabad Crime Branch were deployed to control the situation.
On Tuesday, a woman and an SRPF personnel were injured during fresh clashes.
Inspector R K Ladva said the situation was brought under control with intensive patroll in the area at night.
“But violence started again at 11.30 am on Tuesday, when people from the two communities again resorted to stone pelting. The SRPF personnel had to open fire to control the situation. It took a few hours to bring in normalcy,” he said.
Assistant Commissioner of Police N M Gohil said Ahmedabad police will talk to leaders of both communities for reconciliation.
