5 hurt in Baramulla, Clashes

BARAMULLA, : At least five persons were injured including three policemen when clashes broke out in North Kashmir’s Baramulla town the other day.
According to eyewitnesses, clashes took place when some youth attempted to stage “pro-freedom” rallies. The youth resorted to heavy stone pelting on policemen deployed in the town and attempted to march towards the police station from main Chowk. In retaliation police fired numerous tear canisters and baton charged the protesting youth.
In the ensuing clashes at least five persons were injured including three policemen. The protests took place at Cement Bridge, Main Chowk, and Tehsil point and at some other places.
“There was no law and order problem in the town as the police took stock of situation immediately after the youth attempted to disrupt peace,” said SSP Baramulla, Shakeel Ahmad Beigh.
Beigh said police arrested four persons who were part of protesting youth and were indulged in stone pelting. He said some of his men received some minor injuries in the clashes.
The twin towns of Sopore and Baramulla observed complete shutdown in response to valley-wide shutdown call by separatist organizations to commemorate death anniversaries of Mirwaiz Moulvi Muhammad Farooq and Abdul Ghani Lone.
Meanwhile, protests also took place in Rohama Rafiabad as the residents sought thorough probe into the killing of Abdul Rahim Gogri who was allegedly killed in New Delhi last Friday.
The protests were led by the Tehreek- Hurriyat District President, Abdul Hamid. The residents raised anti-India and pro-freedom slogans.
Shops and business establishment remained closed and traffic was off the roads.
