Around 500 people participated in a sit-in for the anniversary of Ocalan’s capture in Istanbul‘s Taksim.

A group of Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, supporters gathered in Istanbul’s Tarlabashı neighborhood in a demonstration to mark the 11th year of PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan’s capture.

Around 500 people participated in a sit-in for the anniversary of Ocalan’s capture in Istanbul’s Taksim. The group then dispersed to the city’s Tarlabashı neighborhood, where fights broke out in the side streets. DHA video footage showed police clashing with the demonstrators.

Small-scale violence erupted in other cities across Turkey on Sunday and Monday as supporters of Öcalan took to the streets in protest of his capture.

In the southeastern town of Yuksekova, protesters took to the streets around noon Monday. Roughly 100 people barricaded one of the town’s main streets as well as smaller side streets and started fires. Some protesters threw rocks, tried vandalizing a bank ATM and spray-painted « PKK » on a bank shutter. Police intervened with pressurized colored water and tear gas. Turkish wire agencies at the scene reported hearing sporadic gun shots.

The city was virtually shut down by the police because Monday is the 11th anniversary of the jailed terrorist’s capture in Kenya and subsequent transport to Turkey.

Inneggiando al leader curdo in carcere Abdullah Ocalan, migliaia di curdi in tutta la Turchia sono scesi in piazza tra ieri e oggi per commemorare con la protesta l’undicesimo anniversario della cattura in Kenya – il 15 febbraio 1999 – del fondatore del separatista Partito dei Lavoratori del Kurdistan.

Come hanno riferito le Tv turche mostrando immagini di manifestanti che lanciavano pietre e bottiglie incendiarie contro gli agenti della polizia in assetto anti-sommossa, proteste e scontri si sono registrati in varie città, ma soprattutto a Diyarbakir, nel Sud-est del paese a maggioranza curda, e ad Istanbul, nella parte nord-occidentale.

In alcuni casi i manifestanti hanno innalzato barricate alle quali è stato poi appiccato il fuoco. Per disperdere gli assembramenti di folla, la polizia ha esploso candelotti lacrimogeni ed usato cannoni ad acqua.

La manifestazione principale si è svolta nel centro di Diyarbakir, dove circa 3.000 persone si sono radunate stamani a protestare per poi cercare di marciare lungo uno dei maggiori viali della città. La polizia ha impedito ai manifestanti di avanzare e così sono cominciati gli scontri con lanci di sassi, bastonate e lancio di lacrimogeni. Una trentina di persone sono state fermate.

In tono minore le proteste ad Istanbul dove circa 500 persone si sono radunate nella centrale Piazza Taksim, sulla sponda europea della metropoli. All’ordine della polizia di disperdersi, i manifestanti si sono rifiutati e sono stati quindi caricati ed inseguiti nelle stradine circostanti.
