Osmania univ turns T-war zone

TNN, 21 January 2010

HYDERABAD: Osmania University turned into a battle zone on Wednesday with over 1,500 students going on the rampage. They hurled stones at the

police, damaged the university buildings and set ablaze police vehicles parked on campus, demanding a public condolence meeting for ‘martyr’, K Venugopal Reddy, the MCA student found dead on OU campus on January 19. The fresh round of violence is once again threatening to paralyse the administration.

The clashes left 30 students and 10 police personnel injured and several buildings including Central Facilities Building and OU Academic Staff College damaged. TRS MLA E Rajender and his gunman also got hit. As an upshot, the Telangana Joint Action Committee has called for a bandh on Thursday as well.

Agitated students set burned down three police vehicles including one van and two trucks. They also set fire to a vehicle carrying food for police personnel stationed on campus. Meanwhile, over 30 students were injured and were shifted to nearby hospitals after police lathi charge.

All hell broke loose when over 600 students lead by OU Joint Action Committee (JAC) and political JAC members tried to take a rally around 10.30 am carrying the body of Venugopal from Arts College Building to the Gunfoundry. The students, who were walking along with the ambulance carrying the deceased, weren’t able to cross the heavy police cordon on campus for over 45 minutes. The rally then turned violent when students were stopped at the ladies hostel while on their way towards the OU main gate. At this point, 20 girl students who joined the protesters from the hostel, threw sandals at the police personnel which triggered chaos with the police and Rapid Action Force personnel dispersing the crowd with a lathi charge.

The RAF later fired around 50 rounds of tear gas shells on students to disperse the crowd. The police also fired 10 rubber bullets but this injured one student, Satyanarayana, seriously. However, city police commissioner B Prasada Rao maintained that minimal force was used.

Meanwhile, JAC called for yet another bandh on Thursday in protest against what they called ‘unwarranted’ police action against the OU students.  »We have given a bandh call on Thursday in protest against the police action in OU campus on Wednesday. Only vehicular traffic including public and private buses going for the Sammakka Sarakka jatra in Warangal district’s Medaram will be exempted from the bandh, » Telangana political parties JAC convener M Kodandaram told the media after an emergency steering committee meeting here on Wednesday evening.

The fresh unrest in the region is once again threatening to derail the state administration. While the conference of collectors was held as scheduled here on Wednesday, the meeting of all district SPs scheduled for Thursday has been put off for a later date in view of the Telangana agitation.

Government sources said it was not clear whether chief minister K Rosaiah will undertake his visit to the Telangana district of Mahabubnagar on January 23 as announced earlier.  »Everything hinges on how things develop over the next two to three days, » said an official.
