Clash disrupts treatment at Salimullah MCH

Dhaka, Oct 25 (bdnews24.com) – Treatment at outpatient and emergency departments of Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital remained disrupted on Sunday following a factional clash between two groups of medical students belonging to Bangladesh Chhatra League the previous night.

bdnews24.com correspondent Kamal Hossain Talukder said both the outpatient and emergency departments at the hospital in old Dhaka remained virtually closed, causing untold sufferings to the patients.

A group of unruly students went to the outpatient department at around 11am and forcefully got the duty doctors out of the premises demanding justice for Saturday’s clashes.

Hundreds of patients were waiting there for treatment, he said.

Patient Amir Hossain, who came all the way from Bikrampur, with chest pain, failed to get any treatment, his attendants complained.

Meanwhile the intern doctors at the hospital declared work abstention on Sunday demanding justice for the assault on their fellow colleagues and the students.

Intern Doctors’ Council president Dr Syed Ashraful Islam Rajib told bdnews24.com they would not return to their work at outdoor and indoor departments until they got justice for Saturday’s events.

Nobody except the most critical patients was being given treatment at the emergency department.

Mahbubur Rahman, a doctor of the emergency department, said he was asked by intern doctors and students to provide treatment only to the serious patients who needed emergency attention.

No classes were held at the college since Sunday morning and the college authorities sat in a meeting of the academic council at around 8am following the clash.

Several students, claiming that they were assaulted during the clash, formed a human chain on the campus in protest.

At least 20 people were injured during the clash between two factions of Chhatra League, the student front of ruling Awami League, over establishing control over the campus on Saturday night.

A number of rooms of the main student hostel were also ransacked during clashes, sources in the campus said.

Chittagong Medical College was declared closed until further notice on Saturday after a fierce clash between sctivists of Chhatra League and pro Jamaat-e-Islami Chhatra Shibir over recruitment of new students to their respective parties.

Dhaka, Oct 25 (bdnews24.com) – Probe bodies were formed Sunday following violence and riots by medical students at Chittagong Medical College and Sir Salimullah Medical College in Dhaka that forced the former to close its doors and disrupted patient treatment at the latter’s hospital.

The violence at both medical colleges were sparked by the battle to recruit fresher students to the student organisations that are associated with political parties.

A five-member probe committee was formed to look into violent clashes between Chhatra League and Chhatra Shibir forcing Chittagong Medical College to shut indefinitely on Saturday.

The committee headed by CMC vice principal Dr Aminuddin has been asked to submit its investigation report within the next 15 days, said principal Dr Gofranul Haque.

The CMC principal told bdnews24.com that all students had left the campus by Sunday morning after the college and its dormitories were declared closed following the bloody clashes.

First year MBBS admissions, however, were ongoing despite the student riots and closures, Haque said.

Additional police have been posted in and around the hostels and the campus, he said.

Losses to the CMC and its hostels in the Saturday riots are yet to be assessed, he added.

Violence sparked between Chhatra League and Shibir on Saturday over recruiting fresher students into their organisations.

The rioting medical students, some with faces concealed behind hoods and masks, torched some 15 rooms and further vandalised over 50.

Police were forced to charge with batons and fire tear gas shells to bring the situation under control.

Authorities and student leaders said at least 15 were injured during the two hours of violence.

Other members of the probe committee are professors Dr Anwar Hossain, Dr Mohibullah, Dr Zillur Rahman and Dr Saroj Kumar Majumder.

Classes were suspended at the college from Sunday morning and the college authorities sat in a meeting of the academic council at around 8am.

The probe committee, headed by prof ABM Maksudul Alam, was asked to submit its report by two days. Other members are prof Tejendra Chandra Das and dr Firoz Ahmed Quraishi.

At least 20 people were injured during the clashes on Saturday night. A number of rooms of the main student hostel were also ransacked, witnesses said.

Vice principal at the college Dr Shamiul Alam Sadi said: « Students have started being admitted into first year. The clash occurred over getting the new students to join up. »

He claimed that they were continuing their treatment activities though the intern doctors were abstaining from work.

« Treatment is not being disrupted, but I hope the intern doctors will rejoin work soon, » Iqbal said.

Dhaka, Oct 24 (bdnews24.com) – Chittagong Medical College closed it doors until further notice on Saturday after pro-ruling party Chhatra League and pro Jamaat-e-Islami Chhatra Shibir ran riot, torching and ransacking rooms on campus, in clashes over recruitment of fresher students.

At least 20 people were also injured in a similar factional clash between two groups of Chhatra League at Sir Salimullah Medical College campus in Mitford, old Dhaka.

Kotwali police said the violence began at around 9:15pm and took over an hour to bring under control.

Vice principal at the college Dr Shamiul Alam Sadi said: « Students have started being admitted into first year. The clash occurred over getting the new students to join up. »

The same reason was cited for the violence, arson and vandalism that forced Chittagong Medical College to shut its doors earlier in the day.

Male students left their hostel by 8pm as directed by university authorities, principal Gofranul Haque said.

Female students will have to leave their hostel by 8am Sunday.

« The violence was sparked between Chhatra League and Shibir at around 3:30pm over bringing freshers into their organisations, » said Haque.

The rioting students, some with faces concealed behind hoods and masks, torched 15 rooms and further vandalised over 50.

They were admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital and nearby clinics. Of them, at least six were of Chhatra League and five Chhatra Shibir.

Students said Chhatra League brought out a parade for newly admitted first year students to encourage them to join their numbers. Chhatra Shibir countered with a procession of its own.

Heated arguments were exchanged between members of the two organisations leading to chase and counter-chase though no clashes occurred initially.

Both organisations later held rallies inside a hostel, at which point violent fighting broke out with both sides equipped with rods, sticks and bricks.

The clashes running up to 5:30pm spread out to nearby Chatteshwari Road and Chalkbazar area.

Locals were panicked while vehicles were forced to a stop for around one and half hours, said police.

Sub-inspector of Panchlaish police Abdullah Al Mamun told bdnews24.com that the situation was eventually brought under control as adequate numbers of police were deployed and students started leaving the campus.

He also said no one was arrested yet and neither side had lodged any complaint with his station.

CMC’s Chhatra League president Tanvir Ahmed claimed: « Shibir workers attacked us premeditatedly on the pretext of congratulating students admitted to the MBBS course. »

« They torched and vandalised the rooms of Chhatra League students. »

« They rampaged through the hall with the help of outsiders after they were driven out of the hall by general students. »

CMC’s Shibir president Sazzadur Rahman, in turn, accused the Chhatra League of attacking them on the same pretext of congratulating freshers.

He told bdnews24.com: « The Chhatra League even attacked leaders and workers of the city chapter of Chhatra Shibir who were holding a procession Chhatteshwari Road’s Chalkbazar-Gulzar crossing. »

20 hurt in Mitford student clashes

Dhaka, Oct 24 (bdnews24.com) – At least 20 people were injured in a factional clash between two groups of pro-ruling party Bangladesh Chhatra League over control of Sir Salimullah Medical College campus.

Officer in charge at Kotwali Police Station Salauddin said: « The violence began at around 9:15pm over gaining control on campus. »

« But we have brought the situation under control, » he told bdnews24.com at around 10.30pm.

Vice principal at the college doctor Shamiul Alam Sadi said: « Students have started being admitted into first year. »

« The clash, in fact, occurred over getting the new students to join their organisation. »

The injured were admitted to Sir Salimullah Medical College Hospital and other private clinics.

Chittagong Medical College was closed sine die earlier in the day following a violent clash between Chhatra League and pro-Jamaat-e-Islami Chhatra Shibir leading to riots, arson and vandalism on the campus.
