It’s a clash that truly shows a lack of sportsmanship. At a soccer match in Rajarhat, some 25 miles from India’s largest city Kolkata, the defeated team attacks winners with bombs and guns, then sets a neighboring premier resort ablaze.

« Some people ran into our property and they were followed by a mob. The mob kept looking for them, they could not find them. So, there was some enragement and they (put) this place on fire, our main building. »

One is dead and 15 others injured.

Kolkata, Aug 24 (ANI): Kolkata police on Monday arrested 12 people in connection with Sunday’s violence during a football match.

The violence erupted after an irate mob set a premier resort on the outskirts of the city on fire on Sunday evening.

According to sources the team that lost the match picked up a fight with the referee. Soon, some trouble mongers stormed the ground, threw bombs and even opened fire, killing one boy.

Police said problem started after the loosing team suddenly attacked the winners with bombs and guns.

“One person was killed and over 15 were injured in the clash. The injured were hospitalised. At least 30 cottages have been burnt and 10 fire tenders are trying to control the blaze,” Deputy Inspector General of Presidency Range, S N Gupta said.

The hooligans then fled to the Vedic Village – a luxury tourist resort next door. Locals chased them and set some buildings on fire.(ANI)

One killed in India football riots

KOLKATA: A 19-year-old spectator was shot dead and a holiday resort set alight in India as furious supporters of a losing amateur football team went on the rampage, police said.

Violence erupted after the tournament held near the eastern city of Kolkata on Sunday when one side was defeated in the final in a penalty shoot-out. “Associates of the losing team threw bombs and sprayed bullets in and around the football ground after a heated altercation with organisers and the winning team,” police superintendent Rahul Srivastav said. “The team that lost the final was sponsored by a local troublemaker,” he said, adding a 19-year-old had died at the ground after a bullet hit him in the chest.

Supporters of the defeated team then fled to a nearby holiday resort, where they clashed with local villagers, and several holiday cottages were set alight, said one witness. afp
