Pakhtoon SF activist killed; riots in various parts of city

Violence erupted in different parts of the city on Friday afternoon after armed men killed an activist of Pakhtoon Students Federation (Pakhtoon SF), 25-year-old Sohail Khattak, in the jurisdiction of Preedy police.
Preedy police station SHO Kenson Deen said that on Friday afternoon, Khattak was sitting at a printing press in Arambagh Cycle Market, when armed men riding on a motorcycle accosted Khattak and opened indiscriminate fire.
Khattak died on the spot, while his assasins fled.
Deen added that Khattak was immediately shifted to Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK), where he succumbed to his injuries.
Activists of Pakhtoon SF meanwhile took Khattak’s corpse to his home in Sultanabad, and also launched their protest, demanding that the assasins be arrested.
Khattak was a student of Urdu University, Moulvi Abdul Haq Campus. He was a resident of Sultanabad, Keamari Town.
After reports of the assasination spread, armed men resorted to aerial firing and started forceful closure of shops in various parts of the city, including the whole of Saddar.
Activists of Pakhtoon SF and Awami National Party (ANP) also launched their protest in Mauripur and Sultanabad, while miscreants torched tyres at various parts of the city in protest.
After Khattak’s death, the Pakhtoon SF activists launched their protest inside the premises of the CHK.
Later a heavy contingent of police reached the spot and after some resistance brought the situation under control. Furthermore, unidentified armed persons forced the closure of shops in Saddar, Mithadar, Kharadar, Lyari, and other parts of the city.
Before the murder of Khattak, armed men had killed a Quetta hotel owner in Liaquatabad.
The police said that Aleem Khan was shot dead while his brother Saleem Khan was injured. Aleem was sleeping in his hotel when armed men entered after opening the shutter.
The deceased was a resident of Pishin, Quetta. He leaves behind a widow and seven children. He was running the hotel in the area for the past two years. A case has been registered.
In yet another incident, 30-year-old Orangzeb a rickshaw driver was shot dead by armed men in Hyderi police post of North Nazimabad police station.
Hyderi PP Incharge Sibtain said that, the deceased was a rickshaw driver and was moving towards KDA Chowrangi when two armed men riding on a motorcycle came over, killed Orangzeb on the spot and fled. The deceased was the resident of Block-S, North Nazimabad. A case was registered at the police station.
Due to the disturbing law and order situation in the city, the Provincial Police Officer (PPO) Sindh Sultan Salahuddin Baber Khattak, while taking notice of unruly events in Karachi and other areas, directed the Sindh police to take stern action against the miscreants who are found involved in any sort of unlawful activity.
He directed the police authorities that the system of patrolling by police should be made more stringent and special focus of patrolling should be made on areas marred by unruliness and rioting. He said that anyone found doing any criminal activity which had the potential to disturb the peace should be arrested by the police without any delay.
Till filing of this report, the situation in the city remained tense, and incidents of aerial firing were reported from various parts of the city.
PSF man’s murder results in chaos in city

KARACHI: The firing of unidentified culprits killed another man belonging to Pakhtoons Student Federation (PSF) on Friday.
The city closed down after the miscreants started riots and restored to aerial firing but no major incident took place.
Heavy contingents of law enforcers were asked to take strict action against those who were taking law into their own hands by rioting and aerial firing but they were unable to arrest any of the culprits till the time this report was filed.
Riots broke out in the city after a senior member of the PSF was killed. Sohail Khan Khattak, 25, son of Zahid Khattak, was shot dead near Pakistan Chowk within the jurisdiction of Aram Bagh police post.
PSF Provincial Deputy Organiser Dr Imran Afridi while talking to Daily Times said that the deceased was a senior member of PSF and was also a member of PSF’s provincial organising committee. Earlier, he had also served as a central committee member.
While strongly condemning the incident, Afridi said that the deceased did not have enemies and was not involved in criminal activities. He added that the people who want to disturb the peace of the city have now started targeting the student wing of the ANP. “He was such a nice person and his murder is linked with the recent killings of PSF workers,” Afridi said.
In the wake of the murder, riots broke out in different parts of the city, especially in Pakhtoon dominated areas, including Banaras, Sultanabad, Keamari, Baldia Town, Sohrab Goth, Quaidabad, Malir, Daud Chowrangi, Qazafi Town, Majeed Colony, Queens Road, Mai Kolachi Road, Methadar, Kharadar, Light House, Jama Clothe, MA Jinnah Road, Guru Mandir, Soldier Bazar, Numaish Chowrangi, Saddar Town, Paposh Nagar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal Town. Unidentified men resorted to aerial firing to force the shopkeepers to shut their shops and angry people also burnt tyres on the road, pelted vehicles with stones and caused massive traffic jams.
The incident happened when the deceased was sitting at his printing press located near Pakistan Chowk where two men, riding a motorcycle came and fled after shooting him. He received a bullet wound to his head. A 9 mm pistol was used in the assassination. The injured was taken to the Civil Hospital, Karachi where he succumbed to his injuries. After receiving the news, hundreds of Pakhtoons arrived at the hospital where they started a riot and beat up doctors as well. The deceased was a resident of the Sultanabad area and has left two minor children and a widow behind.
Meanwhile, the PSF provincial deputy organiser said that a strategy is being devised to tackle the continuous killing of PSF and ANP workers, while demanding that the government conduct an inquiry into the matter immediately. No police official concerned was available when contacted and no case was registered till the time this report was filed.
However, according to a handout issued on Friday, Sindh Inspector General of Police (IGP) Babar Khattak has ordered that the police officials take strict action against miscreants and enhance patrolling in the tense areas.
ANP man killed: An Awami National Party (ANP) leader was shot dead by unidentified men at night on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Aurangzaib, 35, alias Babu, son of Nabiullah, a resident of Nusrat Bhutto Colony. The incident took place when the deceased, in his rickshaw, was near the KDA Chowrangi, North Nazimabad within the jurisdiction of Hyderi police post, when motorcyclists opened indiscriminate firing on him and fled the scene.
DSP Mirza Majeed Baig said that the incident was a target killing in which Aurangzaib received five bullets and died on the spot. A 9 mm pistol was used in the incident.
The DSP further said that the police have found some evidence that suggested that he was affiliated with the Dawat-e-Islami. However, ANP Sindh General Secretary Amin Khattak told Daily Times that the deceased was the vice president of the ANP Bilalabad ward.
Riots grip City after PSF worker’s killing

KARACHI – Riots gripped the City on Friday after the killing of a worker of Pukhtoon Students Federation (PSF), a student wing of Awami National Party (ANP).
Riots broke out after the killing of PSF senior member, Sohail Khan Khattak, 25, son of Zahid Khattak, who was shot dead near Pakistan Chowk within the jurisdiction of Aram Bagh police post.
Provincial Deputy Organiser PSF, Dr Imran Afridi, while talking to The Nation said that the deceased was a senior member of the PSF and also the member of provincial organising committee of PSF.
Scores of activists of ANP turned up violent and ransacked Civil Hospital Karachi when doctors pronounced the death of Sohail. Dr Afridi said that culprits intended to disrupt the peace of the City behind the killing. Riots broke out in the Pakhtoon-dominated areas including Banaras, Sultanabad, Keamari, Baldia Town, Sohrab Goth, Quaidabad, Malir, Daud Chowrangi, Qazafi Town, Majeed Colony, Queens Road, Mai Kolachi Road, Methadar, Kharadar, Light House, Jamia Clothe, MA Jinnah Road, Guru Mandir, Soldier Bazar, Numaish Chowrangi, Saddar Town, Paposh Nagar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal Town and other areas.

After receiving the news, hundreds of Pukhtoons arrived in the hospital where they started rioting and also beat the doctors. The deceased was said to be the resident of Sultanabad area, who left behind two minor children and a widow.
Meanwhile, PSF provincial deputy organiser said that the strategy was being made regarding the continuous killing of the PSF and ANP workers and demanded of the government to take immediate action against the culprits. It is pertinent to mention here that skirmishes have been going on for the last two months and number of activists and innocent people were killed because of the rising political tension.
