THE Department of Immigration and Citizenship still does not know what triggered a violent protest by illegal Chinese immigrants at Maribyrnong Immigration Detention Centre in Melbourne‘s west.

About 20 detainees went on a destructive spree, wrecking furniture at the centre in Hampstead Road about 8pm (AEST) yesterday.

Emergency crews from the Metropolitan Fire Brigade were placed on standby outside the facility as detention services provider G4S brought the situation under control.

When asked what triggered the unrest, an immigration spokesman said: « Their reasons were their own. »

« There was some property damage but the detention services provider got it under control pretty quickly. »

The protesters were among 39 illegal immigrants detained in March at a Warrnambool abattoir.

ABOUT 20 Chinese nationals being held at Maribyrnong Detention Centre were last night involved in a volatile stand off with guards, causing extensive property damage, according the Department of Immigration.

Police and fire crews were on standby outside the centre last night as the disturbance that began in the late afternoon continued.

A department spokesman said no one had been injured but the damage to property, such as tables and chairs, was extensive. « Up to 20 detainees tonight became aggressive and involved in property damage, » he said. « Detention services provider G4S has a management plan in place which includes addressing the detainees and trying to calm the situation. »

It is unclear what sparked the unrest, other than anger at being held, and The Age believes no demands had been made.

It is believed the unrest involved some of about 100 illegal workers detained after raids on meat suppliers in three states last month, including factories in Melbourne and Warrnambool.

The group had been working illegally at Midfield Meats before they were transported to Maribyrnong, where they are awaiting deportation.

Sources confirmed that as many as 20 Chinese inmates had smashed windows and doors.

Police and firefighters left the Maribyrnong Detention Centre about 11.20pm.

A police spokesman said the ringleaders had been removed from the group without incident.

There were taken to a separate area within the compound.

About a dozen police and firefighters stood guard outside the centre, before pulling on their riot gear and arming themselves with shields and entering the compound at 10:45pm.

The riots come less than a week after an asylum seekers’ boat exploded near Ashmore Reef, 800km west of Darwin.

A Department of Immigration and Citizenship spokesman said the detainees became aggressive and began damaging property about 7.30pm.

« Detention services provider G4S has a management plan which includes addressing the detainees and trying to calm the situation, » the spokesman said.

There were no reports of any injuries during the disturbance.
