Somalia: Three people dead in Bosaso riots

The unrest was triggered by the arrest of a well known cleric in the city.

Hundreds of youths throwing stones and burning tires blocked the main road in Bosaso.

On Monday, forces of the Puntland intelligence service PIS arrested Sheikh Osman Mohamed Shire, a well known religious activities in Bosaso.

The riots continued till early in the evening, the Police confirm at least three people dead including a PIS officer, and more than 7 people were wounded in the attacks.

Vice President Gen.Abdisamad spoke to the people of Bosaso, through Horseed Radio, calling for calm.

“…the people must calm down, and allow the authorities to investigate…” said the acting President, Gen.Abdisamad Ali shire, the vice President of Puntland.

Gen.Shire said he was not informed about the arrest, adding that there will be an investigation in to the incident.

The Security Minister Gen.Samatar said any one, who took part of the demonstrations will put on trail, saying the law and order is the priority.

“…the government can investigate any given person…there is no reason for disturbing the peace in the city…” said Gen.Abdullahi Samatar, the Security Minister in an interview with Horseed Media.

According to government sources Sheikh Osman was handed over to the Police, on Tuesday.

The Puntland government is not giving any further details on why Sheikh Osman was arrested. Sources close to the government, say he was arrested on suspicion of having links with Al shabab militant group in southern Somalia.
